Luminaries are a unique community experience brought to Fox Hill in the late 1970s by neighbor Barbara Jelniker and her late husband George. The first year they lived in Fox Hill they put out their luminary bags and a few neighbors joined in. It quickly spread throughout Fox Hill until it became the event it is today. In 1982, when the homeowner’s association was formed, the first HOA President, George Prebish, made the event “official” and held it in his driveway for a number of years.

People come from all over Longmont to drive through Fox Hill and see the beautiful lighted pathways. The tradition originates from Mexico and can be traced to 16th century Spain when small bonfires were lit along the routes to churches so worshippers could easily find their way to midnight mass. The tradition made its way to the American Southwest ultimately spreading throughout the United States.

Fox Hill has three filings; the other two filings also partake in this tradition.
